Like Fred, I would not really like to single any one player out. Many had their moments of individual glory, but beyond that the season was one of team effort and (relative) success.

Next year, perhaps, could be Montgomery's turn or Tipper's but that is next year.

not easy which is probably why the team was successful.

looking at those who played 50% or more of the matches:
Kerrigan (leading bowler), Parry (best all rounder?), Mullaney (best bat?), Brown, Procter, Tipper could all be put forward. Even Cross, and Croft if he had played more championship games.

The main disappointment was the wretched season Shankar had, probably because it was stop, start with injuries and illness.

What about Croft, who scored 589 runs in both competitions at an average of nearly 74?

Breese has a career batting average of 26, and a bowling average of fractionally under 30. As he's an off-break bowler, and we haven't got any others, I can understand the interest.

I see Montgomery didn't take a wicket in either final, so I would imagine interest will have waned. Kerrigan took three in both matches, which is encouraging.

In a low scoring match Proctor getting 41 again shows real promise.

In what may have been a seamers paradise 3 wickets for Kerrigan is also a good performance.

The 2nd XI championship averages now include the final games v surrey and show Kerrigan top wicket taker with 26 at a better average than Parry who has been excellent in the first team so hopefully he will make his debut in 2010.

Spoke to a Durham member when we played them at OT who said Breese was likely to leave them and come to us. This is now on the BBC 606 thing and seems a major rumour in the north east. Just hope thats all it is!

He opens for the seconds but all decent batsmen play there as its the only position to really improve for all but rookie players.
Graham Lloyd opened in the seconds but made his career at number 5 and there are many others like that. Mind you our record of producing batsmen since Crawley its that good so not that many examples.

one final point to note about the 4,5,6 or opener question.

Horton.

4 or 5 years ago very few would have considered him an opener rather than a no.4

But evidently not a fit pitch for a 50 over final. As Yorkshire chose this ground for the match you would think that they would have checked that there was a properly prepared pitch available.

RE: Lancs v Surrey Championship final OT 16-18 Sept

Frank Hayes wrote:

paulisi wrote:

Judging from the couple of days that i have seen, there are two or three knocking hard on the door of the first team.

Thats good to hear are they the aforementioned, Mullaney, Tipper and Shanker or have you others in mind.

I am always interested in the opinions of those that attend games as I cannot myself so any type of feedback would be welcomed.

Mullaney is the obvious choice to step up. I was very impressed by his maturity and composure.
Brown has been knocking on the door for a while - i'm sure he will break through with an extended run, especially if we lose DuPlessis and Loye.
Tipper may need another season in the seconds to prove that this season was no fluke. Kerrigan looks a bigger spiiner than Parry and is very similar in style and control. He could well be the second spinner in the championship.
Shanker - i'm not convinced yet.

Difficult to assess Caunce and Montgomery based on a flat batter.
